Bloons Tower Defense 3 is Ninja Kiwi's take on the classic lane-defense formula, with a twist that keeps it fresh: your enemies are balloons, and your army is a troop of monkeys armed with darts. Balloons float along a fixed track toward the exit, and every one that slips through costs you lives. Your job is to pop them all before that happens.

It is a good fit for anyone who came to Pokémon Tower Defense for the placement-and-upgrade loop. The pace is friendlier, though. Rounds are short, the tracks are readable at a glance, and a failed run usually teaches you exactly which corner of the map was under-defended. This is the original 2008 Flash release, running here through an emulator, so it opens in the page with nothing to install.

How to play

Wait for the intro to finish, then choose a track and a difficulty. Open the Buy Stuff panel, click the tower you want, and click on the grass to place it. Press Esc if you change your mind. When your defenses are ready, press Start Round and watch the balloons enter.

Popping balloons earns cash, and cash buys more towers or upgrades for the ones you already own. The roster runs from the basic Dart Monkey up to the Super Monkey, and there are one-use helpers as well, including road spikes, glue and pineapples. Tougher balloon types appear as the rounds climb, so a setup that is comfortable early on will need to grow.

Tips

• Place towers where the track curves back on itself. A single monkey there covers several stretches of the path and gets far more shots.
• Do not spread money across many cheap towers too early. Upgrading a few well-placed ones usually pops more per dollar.
• Keep road spikes and other one-shot items for emergencies, when a clump of balloons is about to leak through.
• Start on an easier difficulty to learn a track's shape, then step up once you know where balloons bunch together.
